Geng The Adventure Begins

I just got back a while ago from the screening of Geng The Adventure Begins or Geng PengembaraanBermula. If you haven't heard of it and are thinking at the moment 'Oh it must be just another failed local (Malaysian) attempt of a movie' - and might I add an animated one too, 'I will just let it pass', you say. Well that my friend you should not do. Honestly I might have let it pass myself not being much of a local movie fan. Ok not a fan period. Till now.

If I'm not a fan how did I end up at the screening you may ask. I'm proud to say the key people behind this national milestone are my Uni mates from Multimedia University of which some are friends =) That said, I'm not blowing their horn (that doesn't sound right..) cos they are my mates. I mean if I watched it and I truly believed it sucked I would not bother sitting up at 4am and writing this.

It was so amazing that I really don't know where to start. The characters, the story, the script, the screenplay....

So we shall start with the story:
Two KL boys Badrul and his friend Lim go back to Badrul's gramps' village where there is said to be a Durian (yes that smelly fruit that foreigners think we are crazy to love with all our heart but they would rather eat life roaches on Fear Factor..) thief whom the villagers belief to be a ghost. As soon as the boys enter the village they are greeted by a host of buoyant lovable characters. Very quickly they get acquainted to two cheeky little lads Ipin,Upin, thier sister Kak Ros(the only chick in the movie) whom is not a very tolerable or affectionate person and later Rajoo. Rajoo though timid compared to the crazy fun loving twins is more matured because of his age and is gifted with an ability like Ma-Ti from Captain Planet. What started of as a trip to the orchard to pick some Durians becomes the adventure of their life when they meet a bizarre little creature and a few uncanny beasts that lead them deeper and deeper into the jungle.

The characters:
Les' Copaque Production really did their homework. They adhere to the typical Malaysian Truly Asia way of making a movie where at least 3 main ethnic groups are portrayed. I usually get put off and annoyed by the stereotypes, but I must say this was very tastefully and cleverly done. What you usually get is one of the ethnic characters, usually the Indian followed by the Chinese one being the brunt of all the slapstick cheap jokes. It's safe to say that these people at Les' Copaque had extensively studied people or rather have an innate understanding of people per se. What I found intriguing though is that Rajoo was given quite a significant role which is very rare for a local movie especially one produced by a largely non-Indian team (no racial slur here, just stating as a matter of fact so don't call the freaking ISA on me!).

The screenplay:
I have a habit of talking, checking my messages occasionally and getting fidgety but this was not the case with this movie. You will be lucky if you get to blink an eye cos there is always something happening on screen. I also love that it has action, suspense, comedy and the parts that make you go awwwww. To me all of it was put together seamlessly and left me no room for complaints.

Conclusion:
Don't miss the chance to catch this in cinemas. I'm telling you DVD is just not gona do it...you won't believe how awesome the action scenes are until you watch it.

Anas, Zaid, Shafiq - Im so proud of you and your team. Thumbs and Bigtoes up for yo!

25 random things, facts, habits ..........

1. I loved the feeling of drinking Milo out of a feeding bottle. When I was in Uni my roomate Thana got me one for my b'day one year - I made some nice warm Milo got under the sheets and suckled to sleep =D Would I still do it now? Perhaps.

2. I like to eat the skin around my fingers. It's sweet. I guess that's why there were/are canibals.

3. I really want to be a supermodel but my family doesn't support that idea. My family is more important to me so...

4. My dad got me a very short crop when I was 12. It then grew into this massive afro. I was called alley cats when I stepped into secondry school. I didn't realise how awful I looked till I was much older and I saw some (a lot of) pictures.

5. I was always uncomfortable with my height till I started working. I always felt like a freak before that.

6. I learnt about sex when I was 7. I had a hard time digesting it though. It sounded to disgusting. But then when I came to terms with it I tried explaining to my classmates (girls) by drawing them out in a sheet of paper torn out of a math book. The teacher snatched it away. No action was taken. Perhaps the drawing was that bad?

7. I hate to be ordered!

8. Eventhough my grandma has passed on, I still feel she is alive. I see her in my dreams ocassionally and it makes me happy.

9. My dreams are very vivid. I write them down sometimes. I love to dream. It is when your mind is really honest with you.

10. I've never thought of marriage till Sujen.

11. I want to name my first son Suryan which is tamil for Sun. He will be bright and as important and warm as the sun and also if u break up the name Su-Ryan, Ryan for Ryan Giggs. Hopefully he will be the best leftie player someday =)

12. I think I have eaten a cocroach. I had a dream once that I eating broccoli n cheese and some brocolli had got wedged between my front teeth. Half asleep I removed it and left it on my bedside table. When I woke uo in the morning I checked to see if there was anything on the table cos the dream was so real. I found what looked like a tiny cocroach's skin.

13. I hate roaches and lizards!

14. When I was in Form 1, Bulma and I were eating some Blackforest chocolates that we snuck under the table in class. We both like the ones with the crunchie cookie inside but ate around those with they jelly kinda thing. We colected the jelly thing (which looked like jelly beans) under the table. During break time we offered them to some Form 2 boys who thought they were so cool. We had a good laugh after that!

15. While in MMU, they were doing some rennovation on the between the FCM n Management building. As so they had put a safety net from one building to the other. So a few of us (all girls mind you) thought we would test out the strength of the net by climbing from one end to the other. I don't remember how high it was but it was a coupla storeys at least. Mannnn that was crazy! I remember Joanne and myself climbing across, not sure about Amee, Ching n Mel though. Anyone remember this?

16. Im an adrenaline junkie.

17. I'm not into huge muscles. I prefer lean.

18. That said I duno why the hell I had this huge lifesize Peter Andre poster when I was a teenager in my room. I used to sleep on the top bunk and the picture covered the wall beside me. He was staring out from a sheet of (of all colours pink!) satin. OMG its so gay. And not to mention it looked sick. What the hell was wrong with me? Thank god those times are over.

19. I'm not really into material things but I think money can buy you essential things and experiences.

20. Im a jack of all trades.

21. When I was 14 I had an art exam. I was to do a mixed media piece with oil pastles and watercolour. It was a picture I had taken of a Shakespere book. The teacher didn't allow me to leave the class to get water. With not much time in my hand I spat into my pallete while no one was looking, and spat again and again till my mouth was dry.. eventually I used it to paint the whole background and past it up. When the results came out I got a high mark and the teacher was so impressed with the 'textured' background. She told me how good it was while feeling the texture with her fingertips....Oh god..Im so sorry =(

22. I think I have too many calling names..that I maybe schizo. There is Abs - the cool one (which I love), Jay (still getting used to it) - the proper one, Abby (which I hate) the little girl, Abe ( which Im ok with) the nice girl. There are few more variations that make life more complicated.

23. I would like to meet Oprah and Justin. But when I do I would really not know what to say at all Im sure. I would hug Oprah and dance with Justin, and then take them to restaurant Lima Bintang so that they can try my fav roti canai n nescafe combo.

A famosa Waterworld

So you want to go on a holiday? You love the water. You love animals. Then heed my advise...Stay away from A Famosa Resort, Malacca.

It's a damn cut throat place I tell you. When you reach there you think you are in for a good deal cos the ticket for the Waterworld and Animal World together seems pretty reasonable. Well I was fooled all right.

Once you get in you have to pay for almost everything. When I walked into the Animal World, there were some 'Red Indians' that looked more like thugees. I was tryina ignore their gaze but out popped a chirpy lady saying to me 'Hi do you want to take picture with the Red Indians? They are very friendly, don't be scared.' I shook my head politely and quickly walked towards my parents. As I did so a magnificent blue n yellow parrot perched on my shoulder. A guy popped out of no where with a camera n takes a picture of me with the bird. Since we had our own camera my dad whipped it out to capture the moment. The guy quickly told us that we could not take pictures. If we want we can purchase d picture he had taken for 10 bucks. 10! 10 bucks! No thank you. Moving on.

Next we past a series of undernourished animals as we headed to the animal show.
The show was good of course with Malaysia's favourite primate - the Orang Utan reminding us of how closely related we were to them as they executed stunts like riding a bike, dancing etc. After the show they asked us the audience if they would like to take a picture with the ape. For 10 bucks of course.

Then we followed the crowd to the bird show.

Birds doing arithmetic, birds coordinating with each other in dance, birds 'speaking' (they sounded retarded-but in a cute way, but I can't imagine how annoying that would be if I had to hear it every waking day), graceful flamingos, swooping eagle, then there were the parrots that could 'draw'. Or rather pick colours with their beaks n doodle/conteng some random thing. If I had to guess I would have said they were colour blind! Then the highlight of the show... Parrots that fly towards you n sit on your shoulder if you hold up a .....~drum roll please~ a red note..or Ringgit Malaysia 10! There u go 10 bucks again suckers. I really pitied those parents who came with their many little goo goo eyed kids. Of course being kids it would be surreal to get a beautiful bird fly toward n perch upon you and as a parent you would want your child to experience this cos lets face it, it's not something that one would experience everyday. Yeah ok 10 bucks please. If you like the idea of colour blind creatures painting with their beaks you can also purchase d painting for 10 bucks.

I was getting sick of it.

Next we took a boat to the 'Monkey Island'. I thought they would be happily swinging from tree to tree on their island but boy was I wrong. What did they deserve to be trapped in a Monkey Guantanamo Bay? Each monkey sat quietly as if repenting their sins in a tiny concrete cell. Some cells had 2 or 3 primates or should I say INMATES. It was indeed a sorry sight I kid you not.

All in all it was a depressing visit for me and I still don't get the relevance of a bunch of Malay guys dressed in so called red Indian garb in the Animal World and why anyone would pay 10 bucks for a picture with them. Strange.

The water park was alright though.

*this is dedicated to Ashrel since you say you miss my pictures with strange captions. But....I think I'm losing my funny juice... time for a revival
